Selection of High Yielding Vegetable Mesta

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was under taken in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications of three lines of each treatment at Greenhouse primises, Dhaka and JAES, Manikgonj for evaluation their yield and adaptability. The seeds were sown in Mid March and harvested when calyces were matured. Relevant data were recorded. The collected strains were used for future breeding study.The experiment was sown on 14.05.07. The highest amount of leaf was obtained from the treatment M-780 (117.50 g). The highest number of fruits (65/plant) and the highest amount of fruits and pericarp were found in the treatment No. M-715 (75.30 g and 45.28g/10 fruits). Calyces were free from prickles.

Objectives:

a)To develop smooth mesta breeding lines containing higher amount of edible delicious leaves and smooth calyx fruit

b)To develop vegetable type mesta for the requirement of vegetable.

Methodology:

Six lines of smooth mesta namely, M-406 (red, short fruit), M-715 (red, long fruit), M-720 (white, with red stripe, long fruit), M-750 (leafy habit), M-780 (leafy cordate) and M-1003 (white fruit with red stripe intermediate type), containing higher amount of foliaceous edible calyces and 2 lines fleshy edible having higher amount of edible delicious smooth leaves were selected during the year 2007. The study was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications of three lines of each treatment at Greenhouse primises, Dhaka and JAES, Manikgonj for evaluation their yield and adaptability. The seeds were sown in Mid March and harvested when calyces were matured. Relevant data were recorded. Plant hegiht, base diameter and weight of leaves per plant, number of fruit per plant, weight of ten fruits per plant and weight of pericarp of ten fruits were also recorded. Proper intercultural and agronomic practices were done for raising the parental materials. Six lines of smooth mesta containing higher amount of foliaceous edible calyces and 2 lines fleshy edible having higher amount of edible delicious smooth leaves were selected during the year 2007. Collected strains were be used for future breeding study. The experiment was sown on 14.05.07. The highest amount of leaf was obtained from the treatment M-780 (117.50 g).
