Three varieties of sugarcane, grown at three locations, were chemically analysed fortnightly over a period of three months for percent recovery of sucrose from sugarcane. The experiment used a split-split plot method with time in the sub-sub plot, variety in the sub- plot and location in the main plot. Starting from the date of plantation till harvest all intercultural operations and managements were kept constant. Single and combined effects, found significant at various level of tests have been presented graphically and in tabular form and discussed. Varietal (V) and locational (L) effects were found significant at 5% level while time (f) effect was found to be significant at 1% level. The effect to time on percent recovery of sucrose of different varieties (V x T) showed that while one reached the maximum of reverable sucrose during the early part of the study-period, the other did the same only during the later part. Study of VxL revealed locational suitability of certain variety over the other. L x T indicated that by the time % recovery of sucrose has shown declining trend in one place, it has continued to increase steadily even after that at other place. All the interactions V x T, T x L, L x V, and V x T x L were all found significant at 1% level except V x T which was, at 5% level. The test for homogenity (% C. V.) of this experiment falls within statistically acceptable range.

  Sugarcane

To study under Bangladesh agroclimatic conditions, the effect of these factors individually and in combination on % recovery of sucrose from sugarcane.

Three commercial varieties viz. Co 1158, Co 975 and Co 17 were cultivated at RJSM Farm, KSM and JSM Farm. The varieties were placed randomly with four replications and the experiment was conducted during the cropping season of 1974- 1975. Some of the important characteristics of these varieties and locations are given below:-

A medium straight cane with good germination and tillering habit. A mid-late maturing vari stv with about 11% sucrose content attained in later part of February. Slightly resistant to top-borer but moderately resistant to disease and pest. Average yield about 650-800 maunds/acre. A medium tall cane with good germination and tillering but late maturing. It attains 11 % sucrose content in mid February. Moderately resistant to top borer and black smut, otherwise fairly resistant to disease and pest. Average yield 700-850 maunds/acre. A medium heavy, hard cane, well in germination but shy in tillering. This is a moderately top-borer resistant and mid season variety attaining about 11 % sucrose content in the early part of January. Average yield 600-700 maunds/acre.

Locations: Calcarious loam of the Gangetic alluvium flood-plain with a poorly drained soil. It is high in PH (7.9); moderate in organic matter (1.0f4%) and medium in CEC (11-13 meq/ 100 gm). It contains about 0.055% total N,17 pprn availab!e P and 0.68 meq/100 gm exchangeable K. The farm soil is heavily dressed with press and mean ann ual temperature is about 78°F and rainfall is about 60". Calcarious clay loam in the Gangetic alluvium flood- plain, deeply flooded but poorly drained. It is high in PH (8.5), moderately high in organic matter (1.18%) and about equal in CEC of RJSM soil. It contains about 0.047% total N, only 4 ppm available P and about 0.56 meq/ 100 gm exchangeable K. The mean annual temperature of the locality is about 780F and the average rainfall is about 70". The soil of this location falls under the Tista flood-plain and is of light grey silt loam type. Imperfectly drained, it is medium low in CEC (8 meq/100 gm) and acidic in PH range (6.1). It contains about 1.33 % organic matter and 0.060 % total N. Available P of this location is fairly high (58 ppm) though it is low in exchangeable K content (0.16 meq/100 gm). The mean annual temperature of this location (78.50F) is about the same as those of RJSM and KSM and the rainfall is about 60".

The crops were planted in November, 1974 and grown under rainted conditions. Starting from plantations to harvest, all managements and intercultural practices were kept constant as far as practicable. Fertilizations were made as per general recommendations and schedule. Randomly selected, freshly cut, a composite of five detrashed whole canes collected from different clumps per plot per replication made one sample for chemical analysis and canes were analvsed periodically for sucrose content following the conventional Horne's Dry Lead-sub acetate method (Meade, 1968, Mathur, 1978) over a period of 3 months starting from 10th November, 1975 till 10th February, 1 976 at an interval of 15 days. Statistical analyses were done using the design of the whole experiment as split-split plot with times (dates) in the sub-sub plots, varieties in the sub-plots and locations in the main plots. Single and combined effects were calculated following conventional method of composing parameters together.

In conclusion, it may be mentioned that out of the three parameters studied, tho. ugh time is singularly the most important factor, location and variety have also their own roles to play in and when it comes to interaction, no one is less important that the other in influencing % recovery of sucrose of sugarcane.
