Field Evaluation Trial with an Aromatic Long Fine Grain Rice Line

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To assess the yield performance of an aromatic long fine grain rice line having early maturity this field evaluation trial was set at 5 research stations and at 5 farmers’ field over different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh. The mother Kalozira and a standard check variety BRRI dhan38 were also included in this trial. Seeds were sown on 30 June to 1st July 2010 and transplanted after 30 days at all locations except Jamalpur. Seeds were sown on 7 July and transplanted on 8 August 2010 at this location. A unit plot size was 6.0 m × 5.1 m. Three to 4 seedlings/hill was transplanted within rows of 20 cm apart. Spacing between plants was 15 cm. Recommended doses of fertilizers, cultural and intercultural practices were followed as and when required. Data on days to maturity and yield from an area of 10 m² were gathered. Finally, yield data was converted to yield/ha.. It appears that the line took 115-126 days (seed to seed) for maturity with an average of 121.1 days which was 28 days earlier than its mother Kalozira and the check variety BRRI dhan38. Yield of this line ranged 2.22 to 4.15 tha-1 with an average of 3.03 tha-1 which was 0.81 and 0.90 tha-1 more than the mother and the check variety.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was set at 5 research stations and at 5 farmers’ field over different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh. The mother Kalozira and a standard check variety BRRI dhan38 were also included in this trial. Seeds of the short duration aromatic line RC-43-28-5-3-3 were sown on 30 June to 1st July 2010 and transplanted after 30 days at all locations except Jamalpur. Seeds were sown on 7 July and transplanted on 8 August 2010 at this location. A unit plot size was 6.0 m × 5.1 m. Three to 4 seedlings/hill was transplanted within rows of 20 cm apart. Spacing between plants was 15 cm. Recommended doses of fertilizers, cultural and intercultural practices were followed as and when required. The plots were evaluated by Seed Certification Agency (SCA) teams at flowering and maturity stages. Data on days to maturity and yield from an area of 10 m² were gathered. Finally, yield data was converted to yield/ ha. Moreover, distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) test was performed of the line along with its parent Kalozira as a prerequisite for variety release.

Achievement/Findings:

Finally, the short duration,aromatic,long fine grain rice line, RC-43-28-5-3-3 was released as a variety in 2012 by the National Seed Board of Bangladesh.
