Preliminary Yield Trial of Early Seeding Higher Yield and Low Temperature Tolerant Genotypes of White Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was undertaken with a view to select breeding lines tolerant to low temperature along with better yield of fiber and seed. Four breeding lines namely C-12221, C-12033, C-12038, C-2180 and BJC-7370 as control were tested at Manikganj. Of them, significant differences were observed in stick and fiber yield among the tested lines. Excepting the breeding line C-12038 all other lines gave better yield than the check variety BJC-7370 indicating their superiority over the control.

Objectives:

To develop new varieties of white jute suitable for two main region early and late sowing and varieties with higher yield potential than the existing cultivars.

Methodology:

This experiment was carried out with four breeding lines (C-12221, C-12033, C-12038, and C-2180) and one check variety,BJRI Deshi Pat-5 at JAES, Manikganj to study their yield and yield attributes. These progenies were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications having unit plot size of 2.1m x 3.0m = 6.30 sq. m. Seeds were sown in 16 March, 2002. At the age of 120 days, data were recorded on plant population, plant height, base diameter, green weight, fiber weight and stick weight.
