Two samples of jute–cotton union fabrics of different weave structure/pattern one of jean (Denim) character and the other of simple plain weave (rib pattern) made with identical yarns both before and after finishing were investigated in the Physics department of BJRI during 1984 in standard room temperature and humidity condition using standard method. The results revealed that the finished fabrics suffer a physical and mechanical properties. It was found that Jean cloth and Plain weave cloth suffered a weight loss of about 12.5% and 23% by finishing treatment respectively. Both the finished cloths suffered a little contraction in their widths and showed a remarkable increase in their lengths than those of corresponding unfinished cloth. The two finished cloths though decreased considerably in their cloth strength as well as their yarn strengths other properties like flexibility, crease recovery and thermal conductivity were found to have improved in comparison to their unfinished counterparts, whereas cover factors and warp and weft assistance factors remained almost unchanged.

1. To measure the spinning quality of raw jute and relate this to the strength characteristics of different count of yarn.

2. To measure the physical characteristics of jute fabrics having different warp and weft construction and to relate them to the characteristics of the yarn used.

3. To study on the structural behavior of jute fabrics in relation to yarn characteristics.

To  ascertain the performance characteristics of different jute fabrics two samples of union fabrics (both in grey and finished conditions) produced by BJRI were taken for analysis of their physical and mechanical characteristics. The yarns used in both samples were identical. The two samples were varied only in their weave pattern. One of the two samples was of jean (Denim) character and another one was of simple plain weave (rib pattern). The physico-mechanical properties such as ends per inch, picks per inch, warp and weft wise yarn count, yarn twist, yarn strength, yarn extension breaking of fabrics, warp and weft wise yarn crimp, weight, thickness of the fabrics, cloth cover factor, warp and weft wise cloth assistance factor, crease recovery, bursting strength were measured in the Physics and Testing departments of the BJRI during 1984 at standard room temperature and humidity conditions.

The jean cloth suffer a weight loss of about 12.5% and the plain weave cloth has a weight loss of 23% after they have undergone chemical treatment for finishing purposes. Both the finished cloth suffer a little contraction in their width as is evident from the increase in number of end per inch than that of the unfinished one and show a remarkable increase in their length as (%) yarn crimp drops while undergoing chemical treatment. The two finished cloth show a considerable amount of decrease in their cloth strength as well as in their yarn strength. As regards stiffness both the finished samples have unproved a little that they have become smoother and less stiff. The two finished samples recover significantly from their crease in warp direction but the weft direction which is composed of jute yarn experienced little effect during chemical modification as regards crease recovery. Two cloths have become less thermal conductive after chemical treatment. Although both samples show a change in their different physical and mechanical characters, but cover factors and warp and weft assistance factors do not show as appreciable change.
