Development of Leaf Mosaic Disease Resistant White Jute Breeding Lines and Studies on the Mode of Transmission of Leaf Mosaic Disease in White Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The objectives of the experiment was to isolate leaf mosaic tolerant lines through recurrent selection under field condition and to know the mode of transmission of Leaf Mosaic Virus (LMV) to next generation. The study was conducted with six cultivated varieties of white jute at Manikganj. Chlorotic seeds (collected from infected plants) were sown on 27 March, 2002 in randomized complete block design with three replications. Out of 6 cultivars none was found free from mosaic disease. Mosaic symptom was first appeared on the 30 days old seedling indicating transmission of LMV disease

Methodology:

To isolate leaf mosaic tolerant lines through recurrent selection under field condition and to know the mode of transmission of leaf mosaic virus (LMV) to next generation. The study was conducted with six cultivated varieties (BJC-718, BJC-7370, CC-45, CVE-3, CVL-1 and BJC-83)of white jute at Manikganj. Chlorotic seeds (collected from infected plants) were sown on 27 March, 2002 in randomized complete block design with three replications. Data were recorded on date of sowing, germination, harvesting, infestation by LVM symptom and age of the plant, intensity of infestation, nature of infestation, prevalence of vector pest, plant height, base diameter of 20 randomly selected plants from each plot, plant population at harvest, green weight, fiber weight and stick weight per plot.
