Impact of Rural Mini-nursery on the Sustenance of Poor and Environmental Conservation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Data were collected from 10 mini nursery holder fanners who had training on participatory afforestation from the Fanning System and Envirorunental Studies (FSES) in order to determine the overall seenario of nursery practice, management and its ultimate consequences. These were supplied for afforestation of 1000 households (homesteads). 15 km cropland ails, 19 ha fallowlands, 35 ha rural institution lands (20 nos.), 140 km roads of 18 villages and 10 km railway boarder. Thus total 0.8 million saplings were used while the rest 0.2 million was sold to other people. The average operational cost per year of one mini-nursery was taka 11000 of which the FSES contributed to 15%. The gross average income per year of a mini- nursery was taka 40000 making a profit of taka 29000.

Objectives:

Nursery development of tree saplings with local demands, afforestation in the homesteads, fallow lands, cropland ails, roadside and railway border, income generation and conservation of the farm environment.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken in ten farmers' homesteads at Kazirshimla under Trishal thana of Mymensingh District. At first, thirty farmers were selected in 1992 and gave them training on different techniques of nursery development such as planning, species selection, fertilization., irrigation, use of polybag etc. Out of these thirty, ten farmers were selected to raise rural mini-nursery in their homesteads. The average area of rural mini-nursery was 0.02 ha. Among the 16 selected multipurpose tree species six were fruit, seven timber and three others. Seeds of these tree species were seeded in the polybag in the month of January each year. Data on costs of seed, land preparation, manure and fertilizer, polybag, fencing, carrying and miscellaneous in each year were recorded. Saplings were sold during the months of July to September. The average height of saplings varied from 75 to 150 ern and average value of each sapling was Tk. 2.00. The income of a rural mini-nursery was calculated after selling the saplings in the month of November. During the years 1992-97 about one million saplings were raised under ten mini-nurseries. About 270000, 49000, 246000,20000,32000 and 10000 saplings were supplied for plantation in 1000 homesteads, 19 ha fallow lands, 140 km road side, 10 km railway border from Agri-varsity to Faternanagar railway station, 20 rural institutions covering 35 ha and 15 km cropland oil, respectively under Trishal and Kotwali thana of Mymensingh. Approximately 164500 saplings were used for gap filling and the rest amount was sold to the other villagers. The amount of above ground biomass produced by the supplied saplings during 1992-95 were estimated in 350 households, 100 farmers under roadside and railway border plantation and 7 rural institutions through PRA.

Achievement/Findings:

In Bangladesh condition, much importance is attracted to rural-mini nursery production. This can help the poor to survive in their social environment as well as protecting the production micro-environment through peoples participation in tree nursery development and consequent afforestation in rural areas. Although the major objective of the rural mini- nurseries were for survival of the poor through wood and energy production but this has helped secondarily in afforestation in medium and long term perspective preserving the degraded environment. Besides, generation of suitable technology is a pre-requisite for a sustainable agroforcstry system. The FSES, BAU can playa vital role in this respect.
