Associate Professor
Department of Horticulture Bangabanbhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) Gazipur-1706.

Seed production of black cumin was investigated at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during winter 2012-13. Two experiments were carried out to fulfill the objectives of the study. Among the genotypes, variations were observed in respect of days to emergence, flower bud initiation, fruit setting, fruit ripening, plant height, number of branches, leaf and capsule size, pedicle length, biological yield and seed yield. Exotic genotype gave the highest seed yield (2.36 t/ha) followed by BARI Kalojera-1 (2.05 t/ha), Faridpur local (1.96 t/ha) and Natore local (1.82 t/ha). Oil content was higher in BARI Kalojera-1 and Natore local was found superior in almost all mineral nutrients content. Among the genotypes, Natore local had the highest amount of potasium (1.18%) and calcium (0.66%) content in the seeds of black cumin. In conclusion, exotic genotype had the highest yield potential where as genotypes Natore local content the highest nutrients content.

  Black cumin

• To improve the indigenous and exotic cultivars of Black cumin on basis of yield and nutritional quality. • To determine medicinal value of Black cumin cultivars. • Study of various factors relating to seed quality deterioration. • To find out the yield potentiality of black cumin under different agro-ecological zones in Bangladesh.

The study was conducted at the Horticulture Research Field, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during the rabi season of 2012-13. Laboratory analysis was done at the Seed Science and Technology laboratory, Seed Science and Technology unit, BSMRAU. Four cultivars were used in this experiment as exotic, Iran (V1), BARI kalojeera-1 (V2), Local, Faridpur (V3) and Local, Nature (V4). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments were randomly allotted in each block. Each block consisted of 4 plots and the dimension of each plot was 1.2 m x 1.2 m (1.44 m2) having a plot to plot and block to block distances of 0.5 m and 1.0 m, respectively. Data were collected from the inner rows of each plot to avoid the border effect. In each unit plot, 10 plants were selected randomly for recording data. The following seed yield and yield contributing characters were recorded. 1. Days to 1st emergence 2. Days to 50% emergence 3. Days to 1st flower bud initiation 4. Days to flower bud initiation in 50% plants 5. Days to 1st flower blooming 6. Days to flower blooming in 50% plants 7. Days to 1st capsule setting 8. Days to capsule setting in 50% plants 9. Days to first capsule ripening 10. Days to capsule ripening in 50% plants 11. Plant height 12. Number of primary branches per plant 13. Number of secondary branches per plant 14.
