Study of Relationship Between Fibre Quality and Base Diameter of Jute.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was made at Rangpur, Faridpur and Monirampur research stations from 2001-2007 with four treatments as; Normal line sowing, line sowing with 25 cm spacing, broadcast sowing with seed rate 7 kg/ha and broadcast sowing with Kata bach at 70 days to find out optimum base diameter for higher quality jute fibre.There were four varieties viz., O-9897,OM-1, BJC-7370 and BJC-83. It was observed that the percentage of cuttings increased with the higher base diameter (BD) for both white and tossa jute varieties. If we consider percentage of cuttings as one of the fibre quality assessing character, it is clear that the fibre quality varies inversely with the base diameter of jute plant.

Objectives:

To find out optimum base diameter for higher quality jute fibre.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Rangpur, Faridpur and Monirampur research stations from 2001-2007 with four treatments as; Normal line sowing, line sowing with 25 cm spacing, broadcast sowing with seed rate 7 kg/ha and broadcast sowing with Kata bach at 70 days. There were four varieties, O-9897,OM-1, BJC-7370 and BJC-83 sown with RCBD taking four replications and 4.5m x 3.om size of unit plot. The experiment was sown on an average first week of April and recommended cultural practices as well as recommended dozes of fertilizer were applied.Harvesting was done on an average 120 days of plant age. Records on yield and yield contributing characters. Data were analysed following standard statistical procedures.
