Optimization of Technological Development for Finishing of Jute Goods for Commercialization.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Attempts were made to improve the quality of jute fibre through agrucultural practice, retting practice, chemical and mechanical means. After different chemical treatments physico-chemical properties such as brightness improved from 39-77%, water retention 57-80%, Moisture regain 9.61-10.20%, Tensile strength 139-146 lb, extensibility 8.8-11.5%, alpha cellulose 63-73%. On the other hand, flexural rigidity decreased from 3350-1500mg/cm, hemicellulose decrease 19.80-12.21% & lignin 15.33-13.31% indicating the positive changes of the fibre properties for quality up-gradation.

To increase their diversified uses and market potentiality.

Methodology:

With a view to improve the quality of jute fibre, agricultural practice, retting practice, chemical means and mechanical performance were studied under the present study. During retting, non fibrous materials such as pectin, hemicellulose tannin and wax is removed through retting process. The improvement of physico-chemical properties of jute fibre is possible by various chemical treatments. Chemical modification had been possible to bring through desizing, scouring, bleaching, dyeing, benzoylation, etherification, mercerization, sulphonation and cross-linking changes of the fibre.

Achievement/Findings:

Improvement of fibre quality both in pre-processing and processing stages are essential for value added diversified jute products. Various chemical processes and treatments such as scouring, bleaching, softening, dyeing etc. are able to improve fibre quality of jute. From the present study it can be concluded that bleaching of jute fabric, sulphonation of jute fibre, enzymatic treatment of jute fibre etc. improve the fibre quality for fine spinning and good textile performance. Chemical modification of jute fibre has opened up new outlets for the production of value added and diversified jute products.
