Advanced Yield Trial of Smooth Mesta Samu’93 (hibiscus Sabdariffa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A few fibre type plants of Mesta were identified as fully prickle and bristle free in farmer’s field at Khankhanapur, Rajbari in 1993. During 1994-2002, the line was purified and tested against the recommended variety HS-24. In 2003, the line was tested at two location (Manikganj and Faridpur) along with the recommended variety HS-24 as check. Necessary data were taken. The average dry fibre yield of SAMU’93 was 2.48 t/ha. as against 3.00 t/ha in variety HS-24. Although the fibre yield of SAMU’93 is about 17% less than the control HS-24, it has got some advantageous position over the control such as SAMU’93 is completely smooth and early maturing than the control HS-24. The farmer’s are reluctant of traditional mesta cultivation due to prickle on the stem while they are interested for its cultivation as it is devoid of prickle and bristle. The yield of SAMU’93 is expecting to be improved through selection pressure.

Objectives:

To evaluate the selected genetic resources of Mesta in respect of smoothness, earliness and high biomass production at preliminary and advanced yield trial level

Methodology:

A new line of Mesta named SAMU'93 having pricke and bristle free was isolated from the farmer's field of Khankhanapur, Rajbari. In 2003, the experiments were laid out at Manikganj and Faridpur along with recommended variety HS-24 as check along with recommended variety HS-24 as check in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replication having unit plot size of 2.1m x 2.0m= 4.2 sq. m. The seeds were sown in mid April and harvested in Mid-August. Data were recorded on, date of sowing, germination, plant population at final thinning and harvest time, plant height, base diameter, green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves, fibre weight and stick weight. Proper intercultural operations and agronomic practices were done for raising plants properly.
