An attempt was taken to change the cropping pattern Aman-Fallow-Boro into Aman-Mustard-Boro by growing short duration but high yielding mustard varieties with a view to increasing cropping intensity and edible oil production of the country as well as net income of the farmers. With this view point three Upazillas of Mymensingh district viz., Sadar, Muktagacha and Haluaghat and three Upazillas namely Ishwardi of Pabna, Lalpur of Natore and Bagha of Rajshahi districts were chosen. Net return achieved from the rice-fallow- rice pattern was Tk. 50738 per hectare. Five mustard varieties namely BARI sarisha 14 and 15, BINA sarisha 4 and 7, and Unnata Tori-7 were used. The farmers were provided with seeds, fertilizers like Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum, Zinc Sulphate and Boron and cost of insecticide and fungicide were also provided at both BAU and BCSKS component. Gross income generated from growing mustard at BAU component was Tk. 89673/ ha and it was Tk. 85684/ha at BCSKS component. Thus considering BAU and BCSKS together average net return from mustard was Tk. 60336 per hectare. Therefore the farmers get an additional income of Tk. 60336 per hectare through cultivation of three crops.

1. To identify rice based cropping system with short duration oilseed mustard varieties

2.To Increase cropping intensity in the proposed regions of Bangladesh by at least 20 %

3.To Increase total productivity in rice based cropping patterns by at least 15%.

The project was undertaken to transform Aman-Fallow-Boro cropping pattern into Aman-Rapeseed and mustard-Boro for increasing cropping intensity, rapeseed and mustard seed and oilseed production of the country as well as net income of the farmers. With the view point 1200 farmers were selected over three years. During farmer selection priority was given to the interested ones who will follow the cropping pattern Aman-Rapeseed and mustard-Boro. The selected farmers were trained (A total of 32 training camps were arranged and executed) about general pattern of livelihood, calories and nutritional requirements of a person, sources of calories and nutrition, present cropping pattern and cropping intensity of the country, future programs to be taken, quality seed production, distribution and use etc. During training, three technology sheets covering Aman, rapeseed and mustard & Boro were distributed among the farmers. During farmers’ training 37 extension service provider were trained and DAE/BADC/SCA personnel’s were also present. Each of the selected farmers were provided with 1kg rapeseed and mustard seeds, fertilizers, fund for insecticide & fungicide. The rapeseed and mustard varieties used were BARI sarisha 14, 15; BINA sarisha 4, 7 and Unnata Tori 7. For collecting data on various aspects a questionnaire/data collection sheet was prepared. Before going for data collection the data collectors/ Field assistants were also trained for appropriate and uniform data collection.

Among the farmers, 84.25% followed rice based cropping pattern. The farmers who grew Aman and Boro rice the average cost of cultivation were Tk. 27937 and 35770 (total Tk.63707) per hectare and gross income were Tk. 51445 and 63000 (total Tk. 114445) per hectare. Thus net return achieved from the rice-fallow- rice pattern were Tk. 50738 per hectare. For 33 decimal land, one Kg seeds was supplied to each farmer. The farmers were provided with fertilizers like Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum, Zinc Sulphate and Boron and cost of insecticide and fungicide were also provided at both BAU and BCSKS component. Average cost of mustard cultivation were estimated as Tk. 25883/ha at BAU part and Tk. 29052/ha at BCSKS part. Thus gross income generated from growing mustard at BAU component was Tk. 89673/ ha and it was Tk. 85684/ha at BCSKS component. Thus considering BAU and BCSKS together average net return from mustard were Tk. 60336 per hectare. Therefore the farmers get an additional income of Tk. 60336 per hectare through cultivation of three crops (Aman, mustard and Boro) instead of two (Aman and Boro).
