Growth and Development of the Eri-silkworm, Samia Cynthia Ricini (boisd) Lepidoptera: Saturniidae Irradiated on the Eggs with Gamma Rays.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Eri-silkworm, Samia Cynthia ricini (Boisd). Is a domesticated multivoltine insect producing unreelable silk called eri silk. The Eri silk blends well with other varieties of silk and is soft, durable and preferred in its characteristics due (Deka, 1980). In silk industry radiation is primarily employed in evolving breeds of superior quality through induction fo useful mutations and in evolving sex linked breeds through translocations. Moreover radiation in sericulture has been used to fix breeds for hybridization and further increase resistance to disease various radiation. Viz. X-rays, UV rays, alpha, beta and gamma rays, laser rays, and neutrons have been employed for this. Attempts have been made to screen radiation sensitivity in various developmental stages of mulberry silkworm through the use of chemicals and ionizing radiations and it has been observed that radio sensitivity varies according to species, strains, individuals and even in the different developmental stages of an individual (Tazima, 1978). Gamma irradiation has also been employed to identify resistant and less resistant strains of silkworm (Hirobe, 1974).

Objectives:

To screen radiation sensitivity in various developmental stages of mulberry silkworm through the use of chemicals and ionizing radiations.

Methodology:

The eggs of S.c ricini was collected from the swiss Bangladesh Bilateral Ericulture project, Rajshahi University and were segregated in five vials. The egg of one vial were kept as untreated checks and those in other four vials were exposed to 200, 400, 800 and 1600 r gamma rays respectively in Co.60 Gamma ray source at the institute of Food and Radiation Biology, Savar, Dhaka. Neonate worms 150 from each dose were supplied with finely chopped castor (Ricinus communis L.) leaves four times a day at six hour intervals in wooden rearing trays (63X35X5 cms). When in larvae advanced in age whole nature leaves were given. Bed cleaning was performed everyday in the morning. An identical batch of controls was similarly maintained. Mature larvae were individually weighted on an electric balance and their length was measured with a scale. The ripen larvae were then transferred to bamboo made mountage for spinning. The cocoons after their formation were deflossed and cut open with a sharp blade to determine their sex. The weight of whole cocoon shell and pupae were similarly determined. The pupal length was also measured. Freshly enclosed adults were chosen for recording their weight, length and wing span. The experiments were performed at room temperature ranging between 19-24^oC.

Achievement/Findings:

Irradiation with gamma rays produced deleterious effects on the growth parameters and these effects were more pronounced at 800 and 1600 r studied. The shell ratins (%) were slightly enhanced by gamma ray irradiation. The highest and lowest cocoons formation were observed at 0 (control) and 1600 r respectively and the highest and lowest rate of adult emergence were recorded at 200 and 1600 r respectively. In silkworm the quantitative characters viz. growth and survival rates are changed by gamma irradiation depending upon dose rate, total dosage, developmental stage, temperature and other environmental factors (Hirobe, 1974). Future experiments with a wide range of doses on various developmental stages of S.c. ricini are solicited.
