Promotion of Dike-based Cropping Around Ponds in Bangladesh - Status Analysis.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

As an integral part of PONDLIVE project PCA (Participatory Community Appraisal) was carried out with the farmers of rural and peri-urban areas of Mymensingh during 2002 to have an overview of farming households. The main objectives of the project is to analyze the impact of pond aquaculture on the livelihoods of Asian farming households and to enhance the role of aquaculture ponds in nutrient cycling on farms. Two peri urban and two rural villages from four Upazilas of Mymensingh district were selected for this study based on primary and secondary data. A total of 200 male and 100 female participants of four communities participated in the PCA process. Out of 300 farmers substantial numbers of fish and non- fish farmers were joined in this process. Fish farmers refer such category of farmers who mainly depend on fish culture for their household income and they were further categorized into two groups’ viz, active integrated farmers and passive integrated farmers. Active integration implies integration between fish pond and surrounding vegetable crops. However, non fish farmers participated in the different PCA tools like line, activity matrix, consumption matrix, seasonal calendar, wellbeing ranking, village mapping etc. Whereas fish farmers participated in the PCA exercises like current and expected use of pond and water, problem and benefit of integrated farming etc. The findings from the PCA were triangulated in the SOS (State of System) workshop with four stakeholder groups: representatives of households from the communities fish traders, NGOs, government agencies and researchers. It is revealed that in the rural areas proportion of day labor is higher as compared to the peri urban areas and percentage of poor is higher in the peri urban area than rural. Men are mostly involved with agriculture activities and other income generating activities, whereas women are largely concerned with large range of household and domestic activities. In addition to culturing fish, farmers excavated ponds to raise the ground level for house construction, catching wild fish and to store and supply water for the households. Current use of ponds is found dominated by fish culture. Rich men focus on rice cultivation whereas poor men depend to a greater extent on day labor. Fish culture is important to both richer and poorer men.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study is revealed that there is a significant difference between the importance of fish culture among gender. There are separate and combined effect of gender, wellbeing and site on activities and consumption of community people. Expected use, current use, problems associated with fish culture and benefits of fish culture were also affected by group and site separately and combinedly.
