The study was carried out to investigate the phytotoxicity of water extracts from four different weeds viz. Ulu or Cogon grass, Arail, Mutha and Durba on the seed germination and seedling growth of five common crops of Bangladesh such as rice, jute, wheat, radish and lalshak. The treatments were five levels of test solutions prepared from each weed extract viz., i) control (distilled water), ii) the absolute extract (100%) from each weed and its dilutions to iii) 15%, iv) 25% and v) 50% with distilled water, to moisten the germinating substrate in Petri dishes. The experiment was laid out following CRD where each treatment was replicated six times. Regardless of the sources of the weed extracts, the germination percentage of seeds and growth of seedlings of the test crops decreased with the increase in concentration of the extracts and the highest inhibitory effect was observed at 100% concentration. Among the weed extracts, the extracts from Ulu showed more toxicity on the seed germination and seedling growth of all the test crops than the others. The response of the test crops to the extracts varied significantly but radish seedlings (radicle and plumule growth) were most sensitive.

To study the allelopathic effect of aqueous extracts from different weeds on some test crops for their susceptibility to the extracts.

The test materials used in the present study were clean and healthy seeds of five common agricultural crops collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, Mymensingh Office. The crops were namely Rice (Oryza sativa cv. BRRI dhan29), Wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Sotabdi), Jute (Corchorus capsularis cv. Deshi pat), Lal shak (Amaranthus gangeticus cv. Altapetti), Radish (Raphanus sativus cv. Tasakishan). The four weeds such as Ulu or cogon grass (Imperata cylindrica L.), Arail (Leara hlexa), Mutha (Cyperus rotundus) and Durba (Cynodon dactylon) were collected from Agronomy and Crop Botany Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh for the experiment.  Roots of Ulu, Arail, Mutha and Durba each measuring 100g were used for the experiment. 100 g Ulu’s roots was chopped into small pieces and ground to paste with distilled water in a mortar and pestle. The mixture was filtered through filter paper Whatman no. 1 and the filtrates were collected in a measuring cylinder. The extract volume was adjusted to 100 milliliters with distilled water for the bioassay and this was considered as stock solution. Same procedure of extraction was followed for roots from Arail, Mutha and Durba. The final extracts of 100 ml each from root of Ulu, Arail, Mutha and Durba were used stock solution and each extract along with their dilutions were treated as test solutions. As the absolute concentrations are generally strongly inhibited the growth of test plants so each extract was diluted with distilled water to a series of concentrations. The absolute extract concentration (100%) and its 50%, 25% and 15% dilutions were considered as experimental treatment with distilled water as control. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) where each treatment was replicated six times. All treatments were distributed in petridishes according to the principle of randomization. Data recorded for germination percentage and growth parameters were complied and tabulated for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance was done following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with statistical package MSTAT-C software. The mean differences among the treatments were tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

The effect of weed extracts viz. Ulu, Arail, Mutha and Durba significantly affected the seed germination of common agricultural crops viz. rice, jute, wheat, radish and lalshak. Results revealed that germination parentage decreased with increasing the concentration of the weed extract. Control showed the highest germination percentage at 72 and 96 hours followed by 15 % weed extracts irrespective of their sources. On the other hand, the absolute extract concentration (100 %) showed strongest inhibition of germination of these crops. Among the weed extracts, Ulu exerted significantly highest inhibition on seed germination of the crops and Mutha inhibited the lowest in seed germination of the most test crops.
