Yield Performance of Summer Sesame as Influenced by Sowing Date and Variety Under Rainfed Condition in the High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted in the Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) site, Kadamshahar, Rajshahi during the kharif season of 2007 (February-June) to find out the optimum sowing date and variety of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) under rainfed condition in the High Barind Tract. The experiment consisted of five sowing dates viz., 20 February, 1 March, 12 March, 22 March, and 2 April 2007; and two sesame varieties viz., BARI Til-2 and BARI Til-3. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design accommodating sowing date in the main plots and variety in the sub-plots with three replications. The experimental results revealed that all the plant characters namely days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of primary branch plant^-1, capsule plant^-1, seed row^-1, seed capsule^-1 and seed yield varied significantly except 1000-seed weight were influenced due to sowing date. The sowing date 12 March produced the maximum seed yield (813.80 kg ha^-1) was statistically identical with the sowing date 22 March (792.08 kg ha^-1). The lowest seed yield (531.46 kg ha^-1) was observed on 2 April followed by 20 February sowing (669.60 kg ha^-1). BARI Til-3 gave higher seed yield (776.92 kg ha^-1) then to BARI Til-2 (634.81 kg ha^-1). The interaction effect of sowing date and variety revealed that the treatment BARI Til-3 in 12 March sowing gave significantly the highest seed yield (915.20 kg ha^-1) which was partially similar with 22 March X BARI Til-3 (850.42 kg ha^-1) but the lowest yield was found in 2 April X BARI Til-2 (487.92 kg ha^-1). The experimental results showed that the summer sesame variety BARI Til-3 can be sown during 2^nd to 3^rd weeks of March for obtaining maximum seed yield under rainfed condition in the High Barind Tract.

Objectives:

The experiment was undertaken to find out the optimum sowing time as well as suitable sesame variety for rainfed condition of drought prone High Barind Tract.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farmer’s field of Farming System Research and Development site, Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi under the On-Farm Research Division (OFRD) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during kharif season of 2007 (February-June). The soil of the experimental plots belongs to Amnura series under the AEZ 26. The soil texture was silty loam having pH 5.8. The organic matter content is very low 0.95%. The treatment comprised of five sowing dates viz., 20 February, 1 March, 12 March, 22 March, and 2 April 2007; and two sesame varieties viz., BARI Til-2 and BARI Til-3. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications, sowing date in the main plots and variety in the sub-plots. The unit plot size was 3 m X 4 m and plant spacing was 30 cm x 10 cm. The fertilizers were applied in the experimental plots @ 120-130-40-100-8 kg ha^-1 urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and boric acid, respectively. All the fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The plants were sprayed with Diazinon 60 EC @ 2 ml litre^-1 and Bavistin 50WP @ 1g litre^-1 water for controlling the Hairy Caterpillar (Spilarctia obliqua Walker) and Stem rot disease sesame, respectively. For growth study five plants were uprooted randomly from each plot starting from 20 days after sowing (DAS) at 10 days interval up to 70 DAS. Then the plant samples were oven dried at 70 ⁰C for 24 hours and taken the dry matter weight with electrical balance. Besides, ten plants were selected randomly for recording yield components and other plant characters namely, plant height, number of primary branch plant^-1, capsules plant^-1, seed row^-1, seed capsules^-1, and 1000-seed weight. In addition, the phenological parameters like days to flowering and days to maturity were also taken. The yield data were taken from each of the experimantal plots. The experimental data were analyzed statistically and means were tested by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) following Gomez and Gomez (1984) through MSTAT-C programme.

In the High Barind Tract, the maximum seed yield could be possible by planting summer sesame variety BARI Til-3 under rainfed condition during 2^nd to 3^rd weeks of March.
