Performance of BSRI Released Sugarcane Varieties for Gur Production in Chittagong Hill Districts

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The land of Chittagong hill districts are suitable for sugarcane cultivation, and around 7,000 hectare of lands is used for chewing cane cultivation. In the past, no study has been carried out for BSRI developed gur varieties cultivation in the Chittagong hill districts. Thus, deserves due attention to study the performance of gur varieties in the said areas. Manufacture of gur holds a very important place in the rural economy of the hilly areas as well as of the country. If BSRI bred varieties are suitable for cultivation in the hilly belts, gur preparation, preservation and marketing will play an important role for poverty eleviation in the areas. As such, an experiment is aimed to conduct research for screening suitable sugarcane varieties for superior quality gur production. Performance of BSRI developed sugarcane varieties for production in the Chittagong hill districts are satisfactory.

Objectives:

To study the performance of BSRI developed sugarcane varieties for superior gur production in the Chittagong hill districts.
To determine the quality of prepared gur from different sugarcane varieties.

Methodology:

BSRI bred six sugarcane varieties viz. Isd 16, Isd 36, Isd 37, Isd 38, Isd 39, Isd 40 & VMC along with local chewing cane varieties were planted at grower’s plots at Banderban, Rangamati & Khagrasari areas in the month of October, 2011. The trial was set up one at each location following RCB with 3 replications. Management practice were followed as and when necessary. Gur was prepared in the months of October, December 2012 and February, 2013 by open pan boiling method ithout adding any chemical clarificants. The physical and chemical properties of prepared gur was determined with 7 days of its preparation. The varietal suitability for superior quality of gur was determined on the basis of physico-chemical factors of prepared gur.
