Need Assessment of Under Utilized Crops in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

More than 60 species of fruits, 90 species of vegetables, 45 species of spices and a large number of medicinal plants are under utilized in Bangladesh. These can be improved, processed for value addition and marketing for economic development. Under utilized crops are the alternate sources of income generation for the land less people. In addition to that under utilized crops may play a vital role for food security, nutrition and herbal medicine for the well being of the common people of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

1. To identify the underutilized crops and to assess the present status in Bangladesh. 2. To locate the growing areas of different underutilized crops along with their use. 3. To prepare R&D priority of underutilized crops. 4. To analyze existing and potential socio-economic benefit for underutilized crop production. 5. To determine the potential and prospect of underutilized crops for processing, packaging, value addition and marketing. 6. To published and documentation of monograph of under utilized crops in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Different underutilized crops were recorded from survey made throughout the country and literature reviewed. The major characteristics along with their use were listed down and related photograph were taken. A structured questionnaire is developed to collect the information in this purpose. In the questionnaire- growing area and environment, propagation method, production methods, yield, socio-economics, season, processing, marketing, seasonal availability, use etc. were included. The collected data were compiled and presented. Finally, details report were prepared for those crops including all the collected information.

Achievement/Findings:

In Bangladesh, as tropical country it has diversified genetic resources including fruit, vegetable, spices, medicinal and energy crop species ( 60 species of fruits, 90 species of vegetables, 45 species of spices and a large number of medicinal plants are under utilized in Bangladesh). There are so many species which are still not exploited and utilized properly. Therefore, it has ample scope and potentiality to utilize these under utilized crops for food, nutrition and medicinal use. These under utilized crops may play a vital role for food security and livelihood of the poor and land less people, and economic development of the people. It is concluded that through scientific research these could be processed for value addition and utilization for export and commercial use.
