Adaptation of High Yielding Soybean in the Polder Areas of Barguna and Patuakhali Districts

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Agricultural land use in the coastal area is very poor and is roughly 50% of the country’s average. Polders, at present having a network of 124 numbers of varying sizes protects millions of residents from the tidal flooding and saline water intrusion, These are the first line of defense for the inhabitants of the coastal belt. As over 80% of these population are involved in agriculture, it was thought imperative to explore the possibilities of increasing potential of these lands in the polder areas for increased production of crops.Polder areas of of Barguna and Patuakhali are affected by very slight to slight degree of salinity. As Soybean can tolerate salinity to a great extent, introduction of soybean crop in the existing cropping pattern of Rice-Fallow-Fallow in the polder areas could be a worthy effort to utilize these lands and to increase productivity.. With this end in view, for two consecutive years; four high yielding varieties of Soyabean were explored and upscaling done for the potential variety.The result of the study revealed potential opportunity for introduction of Soyabean variety Shohag as a matter of intensifying cropping and increased agricultural productivity in the coastal region. This together with the induction of short duration T.aman variety BRRI dhan 49 and fertilizer application @ 75-190-135-130 Kg/ha of urea, TSP, MoP and gypsum helped to raise cropping intensity by 18% alone. The improved pattern may be recommended for greater extension.

Objectives:

(i) to identify the yield potential of promising high yielding soybean varieties in polder areas of Barguna and Patuakhali district (ii) to develop appropriate management practices for Soyabean cultivation in polder areas (iii) to increase cropping intensity and system productivity in the polder areas and (iv) to improve knowledge and skill of the farmers and up-scaling of high yielding soybean variety in the study area.

Methodology:

The collaborative project activities were executed in two locations of Barguna (Amtali thana) and Patuakhali (Kalapara thana) coastal districts. In total 100 farmers were involved in the research and training activities.Baseline study was done before undertaking the field work.The alternative cropping pattern Rice–Soybean-Fallow was tested against farmers cropping pattern Rice-Fallow-Fallow in the farmers field of those polder areas. In each location, 10 farmers with 33 decimal of land were selected. Three separate trails in the rabi season of year-1 were laid out in 5 m x 4 m plot areas in each farmer’s field using 4 soybean varieties namely, Shohag, BINA soybean-1, BARI soybean-5 and AGS 313 (non- released) in 30cmX5cm spacing and having 3 different fertilizer combinations from urea,TSP,MoP and Gypsum . The treatments were assigned in split plot design with ten dispersed replications (each farmers field was treated as one replication). In the year 2, twenty separate experiements were conducted to select the best HYV T.aman variety for those locations. Based on the findings of year 1, upscaling of the best suitable Soyabean variety along with fertilizer treatment combinations and management were evaluated and refined. In each case, soil nutrient status before and after harvest, salinity at 15 days interval, all major yield contributing characters and dry matter of Soyabean were measured.

Achievement/Findings:

The alternative cropping system incorporating high yielding soybean has been largely adopted by the farmers in the study area. This has increased cropping intensity and contributed to elevate oilseed production along with income. Wider extension of the findings and its adoption in the coastal belt will help to improve livelihood pattern and food security.
