Assessment of Jute Seed Quality Produced in Different Regional and Sub-stations of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 2004.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiment was conducted in Physiology laboratory, BJRI. Seeds were collected from Manikganuj, Faridpur, Rangpur, Kishoreganj, Chandina, Monirampur and Tarabo stations. Viability of the seeds was evaluated through germination test. Vigor value was estimated following the method described by Jain and Saha, 1971. Results revealed that total 44 seed samples were collected from different stations of BJRI. Germination percentages of those seeds were around 80-90% except 3 varieties which showed below 70% germination. Moisture content of 14 seed samples had obtained 7-9% and rest of the samples showed more than 10% moisture, 8-10% deterioration of seed viability was observed after six months storage. It was also showed that initially most of the seed samples had high vigor value (80%) and after six months 8-10% deterioration was observed in vigor value and viability. So, before storing it is very important to keep moisture percentage of seeds at certain level (7-9%) and to maintain this level of moisture drying of seeds has to be done very carefully. After that seeds should be stored in airtight container.
