Dry Matter Partitioning of Tossa Varieties in 2005.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Total 60 plants were collected for each harvest at 15 days interval. Collected samples were separated in to root, leaf, bark and stick and then those were dried in oven at 72o C about 72 hours for constant weight. Before that plant height and base diameter were recorded from collected samples.Resdults showed that the highest plant height and base diameter were observed in variety O-72 (371.33 cm) and variety OM-1 (20.95 mm) respectively at 120 days after emergence (DAE). The highest LDW were observed at the early stage of growth (15 DAE) in all the varieties which were around 75, 75 and 77% in respect of total dry weight for the variety OM-1, O-72 and O-9897 respectively. The leaf dry weight gradually decreased to 10.8 and 8% at 120 DAE for those varieties respectively. On the other hand percentage of SDW increased from 7.69, 11.79 and 9.35 to 47.26, 49.79 and 53.53% for the variety OM-1, O-72 and O-9897 respectively.

Objectives:

To identify and quantify the growth limitations and also growth pattern of C.olitorius varieties.

Methodology:

The varieties O-9897, OM-1 and O-72 were used in this experiment. Twenty-five seeds were sown in four pots for each variety for each harvest. Total 96 pots were sown on 03-04-2005. Eight harvest dates were sequentially selected after 15 days of emergence. All measures have been taken and all cultural practices have been performed as and when necessary during growth period. Total 60 plants (4 plants from each pot) were collected for each harvest at 15 days interval. Collected samples were separated in to root, leaf, bark and stick and then those were dried in oven at 72o C about 72 hours for constant weight. Before that plant height and base diameter were recorded from collected samples.

Achievement/Findings:

Dry matter of different plant parts such as leaf dry weight (LDW), stick dry weight (SDW), bark dry weight (BDW) and root dry weight (RDW) of the varieties were presented in Figures 3, 4, 5 & 6 respectively. Results showed that the highest plant height and base diameter were observed in variety O-72 (371.33 cm) and variety OM-1 (20.95 mm) respectively at 120 days after emergence (DAE). In case of dry matter partitioning, the highest LDW were observed at the early stage of growth (15 DAE) in all the varieties which were around 75, 75 and 77% in respect of total dry weight for the variety OM-1, O-72 and O-9897 respectively. The leaf dry weight gradually decreased to 10.8 and 8% at 120 DAE for those varieties respectively (Figure 3). On the other hand percentage of SDW increased from 7.69, 11.79 and 9.35 to 47.26, 49.79 and 53.53% for the variety OM-1, O-72 and O-9897 respectively. Now the bark the important portion of the jute plant, increased gradually from 11.32, 6.93 and 7.44% to 28.41, 31.78 and 27.48% for the variety OM-1, O-72 and O-9897 respectively. The percent of BDW i.e. the harvest index (HI) was found highest (31.78%) in variety O-72 at 120 DAE. The root dry weights (%) at 120 DAE were 14.08, 10.60 and 10.70% for the variety OM-1, O-72 and O-9897 respectively.
