Collection and Conservation of Indigenous and Exotic Germplasm of Allied Crops – Sugar Beet, Date Palm and Palmyra Palm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This program was conducted to collect and conserve germplasm of of sugar beet, date and palmyra palms as parent materials in the germplasm bank of BSRI, Ishurdi and RSRS, Gazipur during the cropping season 2010-2011. After collection of germplasms from abroad were evaluated at Quarantine Station, Joydebpur for three generations. After performing the quarantine formalities the materials were brought at BSRI. In case of local collection, the germplasm were brought at BSRI and planted in pots to multiply and to evaluate different characteristics. After evaluation selected germplasms were conserved in the germplasm bank of BSRI. Under this programme, two germplasm of sugar beet (Cauvery & Subhra) have been planted in the germplasm bank of BSRI for evaluation.

Objectives:

I. To collect and conserve indigenous and exotic elite crops of sugar beet, date and palmyra palms as parent materials.

II. To use the potential variety(s) for commercial cultivation.

III.To enrich the germplasm bank IV. To increase the scope of hybridization/propagation

Methodology:

Exotic collection of germplasms were evaluated at Quarantine Station, Joydebpur. After performing the quarantine formalities the materials are to be brought at BSRI and planted according to requirement. In case of local collection, the germplasm were collected round the year from different parts of the country. Before collection, the growing area of the country were being listed down. Later on, the collected area were sealed out in the list to avoid the duplication of germplasms. The collected materials were labeled with local name, location, date of collection, flowering habit, etc. The collected germplasms were planted to evaluate continuously by a task force of Breeder, Entomologist and Pathologist. They were also being evaluated for morphological characteristics. After evaluation, all the selected germplasms were planted in a suitable area of germplasm bank of BSRI. The germplasm(s) showing promising for commercial cultivation were multiplied for further evaluation and the flowering ones were used in hybridization programme to develop a high potential variety. In case of sugar beet somaclonal variant were developed through in vitro culture. Afterwards, the developed variety/lines were selected for commercial cultivation.
