Determination of Critical Day Length of Different Varieties/advanced Lines of Jute, Enaf and Mesta in 2005..

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was initiated on 20-04-2005. Flower initiated in the variety OM-1 at 134 DAS if sown on 20th April. After that it was declined to 55 DAS when it was sown on 30th September. The flowering pattern in the variety O-72 was very similar to that of variety OM-1. It was also observed that variety O-4 was very sensitive to short day, varieties OM-1 and O-72 were medium type of short day tolerant but variety O-9897 was tolerant. HS-24 flower did not appear before 205 DAS when sown on 20th Ajpril. The total number of days required for lowering decreased to 78 days in advancement of sowing time from April to September. Kenaf varieties HC-2, HC-95 and breeding line CPI-72126 did not flower before 170, 176 and 176 DAS if sown on 20th April respectively. After that the flowering time become shorter to 85, 110 and 86 days with the progress of date of sowing from April to September respectively. It is necessary to note here that no plants of the variety HC-95 were survived after 20th July sowing.

Objectives:

To identify the critical day length of variety/advanced breeding line of jute, kenaf and mesta.

Methodology:

The experiment was initiated on 20-04-2005 to determine the critical day length of individual variety advanced line of jute, knaf and mesta. Each set was sown at 10 days interval i.e. on 10th, 20th and 30th day of each month. According to the plant and design of the experiment, out of 36 sowing, 17 sowing with tossa and 16 sowing with kenaf and mesta have been completed by September 2005. Then it was not possible to continue the experiment due to unavoidable circumstances. Data have been collected as per program and recorded accordingly.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that the variety O-4 does not flower before 132 days after sowing (DAS) when sown on 20th April then gradually decrease the total minimum number of days required for flowering to 35 days if sown on 30th September. Variety O-9897 does not flower before 162 DAS when sown on 20th April. The minimum number of days required for flowering gradually decreased to 48 days in advancement of sowing time from April to September. Flower initiated in the variety OM-1 at 134 DAS if sown on 20th April. After that it was declined to 55 DAS when it was sown on 30th September.
