Studies on the Control of Liquor Ratio in Jute Dyed Fabric for Cost Minimization.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Liquor ratio is the most important factor for the dyeing of jute fabric to minimize the cost and as well as to minimize the environment pollution from excessive drainage. In reactive dyeing application, the amount of water is very important in several categories. Commonly, the auxiliaries are determined based on the amount of used water. This means if the higher bath ratio is used, need more salt and alkali that means more cost is incurred and vice-versa. On the other hand low liquor ratio gives better reproducibility and higher color yields. So from the above study, low liquor ratio (1:20) is the most advantageous and economically save for the bulk dyeing of jute fabric in the industry. Depth of shade (obtained color %) was assessed by eye vision measuring scale compare to grey scale ISO 105 A02 assessment.

Objectives:

To assess and ensure cost effective method for the dyeing of jute material by the suitable liquor ratio.

Methodology:

STEP-1: BLEACHING Required union grey jute fabric was rolled in a closed sample jigger machine with a liquor ratio of 1:20 (o.w.m.) and processed for one hour at 85-90°C temperature with necessary chemicals- hydrogen peroxide (1 vol. 35%), sodium silicate (5gpl), sodium hydroxide (1gpl), tri-sodium phosphate (4gpl) and non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl). The pH of the bleached liquor was controlled around 10.5. The bleached fabric was then washed off thoroughly with cold water and hot water subsequently, neutralized with acetic acid (2 ml/l) and dried to make ready for dyeing. STEP- 2: DYEING Prepared bleached fabric was taken for dyeing with same dye amount along with necessary dye assistants - common salt, NaCl; soda ash, Na2CO3 and lissapol as mentioned in the below table. At first the liquor ratio was maintained at 1:20 for dye bath-1 and dyeing commenced at 400C, the temperature was raised gradually to 60°C and dyeing was continued at 60°C for 60 min. Then washed thoroughly with cold and hot water with soap solution (5gpl) at 60-70°C for 10 minutes to remove the unfixed dyes from the fabric and at last by cold rinsing dyeing was finished. Then the fabric was dried with manual drying machine. Repeated the dyeing procedure for 1:25 and 1:30 liquor ratio with same way for dye bath-2 and dyebath-3 respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Three liquor ratios 1:20, 1:25, 1:30 was followed for three dye baths, where concentration (%) of dyes was same and time-temperature was also same with necessary dyeing auxiliaries. After dyeing required samples were taken from the baths for the comparison and assessed the effect of the different dyeing conditions on the overall depth of obtained shade of the dye between the samples. The sample of bath-1 was assessed as the best and the dyeing cost was also the lowest (Tk. 54) of the others as liquor ratio (1:20) is the lowest of all.
