Study on the Effect of Salt Concentration During Jute Dyeing on Reactive Dye .

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Wet Processing Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the year of 2012-2013 to study on the effect of salt concentration on jute dyeing. Salt concentration is the most important factor for the dyeing of jute fabric to minimize the cost. In reactive dyeing application, the amount of water is very important in several categories. Commonly, the auxiliaries are determined based on the amount of used water. This means if salt concentration increases exhaustion% and fixation% would be high.So from the above study, we can say depth of shade can be increased without increase shade%.

Objectives:

To assess and ensure cost effective method for the dyeing of jute material by the suitable salt concentration.

Methodology:

a) Bleaching : Eighty (80) kg union grey jute fabric was rolled in a closed jigger machine or vessel with a liquor ratio of 1:20 (o.w.m.) and processed for one hour at 85-90°C temperature with necessary chemicals- hydrogen peroxide (1 vol. 35%), sodium silicate (5gpl), sodium hydroxide (1gpl), non-ionic detergent (0.5 gpl). The pH of the bleached liquor was controlled around 10.5. The bleached fabric was then washed off thoroughly with cold water and hot water subsequently, neutralized with acetic acid (2 ml/l) and dried to make ready for dyeing. b) Dyeing with Reactive Dye: Prepared bleached fabric was taken for dyeing with liquor ratio 1:20,and 1:20 along with necessary dye assistants- common salt,(Nacl) (40 gpl, 50gpl & 60gpl) soda ash, Na₂CO₃(15 gpl) and lissapol (0.2%). the temperature was given to 60°C for half hour. Then washed with cold and hot water with soap solution (5 gpl) at 60-70°C for 10 minutes to remove the unfixed dyes from the fabric and at last by cold rinsing dyeing was finished. Then the fabric was dried with stenter machine.

Achievement/Findings:

Three dye baths was prepared for three liquor ratio with the same shade %, same time and temperature and necessary dyeing auxiliaries. Three samples was taken from the three dye baths for the comparison and then assessed between the samples. The dye bath-1 sample, liquor ratio (1:20) was assessed as the best and the dyeing cost was also lower (Tk. 35) than the others.
