Study on the Determination of the Suitable Brightener for Jute Fabric.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory chemical processing and Testing Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 2012-2013 to improve brightness property of the jute fabric. Jute fabric were bleached with different percentage of hydrogen per oxide and treated with 1% & 2% optical brightener. Tensile strength were determined.We found that tensile strength of samples was decreased by the treatment. About 12-14% weight of the samples was loss by the brightening process. Fancy jute products may be produced by bright jute fabrics.

Objectives:

To study of the finishing technology for jute based fabrics and materials.

Methodology:

Required chemical were also collected from the local market. These are-Hydrogen peroxide, soda ash, lisapol and optical brightener. Substrate: CBC fabric having the following specification was used:13 ends/inch, picks/inch= 14. Scouring and Bleaching : In order to remove the wax, oil, resin and fatty acids from the fabric. First, fabric was scoured by standard method with a solution of 3% sodium carbonate, 1% caustic soda and 1% Lisapol (wetting agent) at 80°-90°C in Jigger machine for 1 hour gaining liquor ratio 1:20. It was then washed with water. The fabric then bleached by standard method with hydrogen-per oxide together with 7g/l sodium silicate, 1 g/l sodium carbonate and 1 g/l lisapol at 80°-90°C for 1 h giving liquor ratio 1:20. The PH was adjusted to 10-11. The fabric was washed with hot water followed by cold water and they dried. Chemical treatment: After scouring & bleaching, optical brightening agent (OBA) is used. Bleached jute fabric treated with 1% & 2% optical brightener and 1 g/l Lisapol (wetting agent) at 80°C temperature. Determination of tensile strength : The tensile strength of the treated samples was measured by standard method.

Achievement/Findings:

It is seen from the test results that brightness property of the samples were increased according to the percentage of the Hydrogen per Oxide. We know that, bleaching treatment increase whiteness and brightness property of the samples. We found that tensile strength of samples was decreased by the treatment. About 12-14% weight of the samples was loss by the brightening process. Further work will continue and conclusion of this programmed will be given in the next year.
