The salt tolerance mechanisms of two mungbean genotypes in response to gas exchange characteristics was evaluated at different photon flux density. The differences in photosynthesis (Pn) between the control and salt affected plants became wider with the increase in photon flux density (PFD) in both the genotypes but the differences were higher in BM 21 than that of BM 01. Compensation irradiant for Pn occurred between 0 and 50 mol m-2 s-1 PFD in BM 01, while it was between 50 and 100 mol m-2 s-1 in BM 21 at 100 mM NaCl. The increase in soil salinity significantly decreased the stomata conductance (gs) of leaves but salt treated plants of BM 01 showed higher gas than that of BM 21. Salinity increased the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in both the genotypes. The differences in the Ci between the control and salt stressed plants of BM 21 were sharpened at and above PFDs of 200 mol m-2 s-1.

In the study the gas exchange characteristics was analyzed to clarify better the salt tolerance mechanism of BM 01 and BM 21 which differ in their salinity tolerance.

Two mungbean genotypes, BM 01 (tolerant one) and BM 21 (susceptible one), were sown in earthen pots in the vinylhouse at the Environmental Stress Research Site of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur. Each pot was filled with 12 kg air-dried soil. Compost (1/4th of the soil volume) and 0.27-0.28-0.20 g Urea, TSP and MP per pot were incorporated uniformly into the soil. The pots were irrigated with tap water until the seedlings were well established. After seedling establishment tap water in control group and 12.5 mM NaCl solution were applied in salt-treated groups up to three days and 25 mM for the next three days for hardening of seedlings before applying actual treatments. When the trifoliate appeared i.e. ten days after emergence (DAE) required amount of respective salt solutions (50 and 100 mM) were applied in 25 pots per treatments. The salt solutions were applied till harvest. Leaf gas exchange was measured using a portable photosynthesis system (LICOR-6200) assembled with an infra Red Gas Analyzer (IRGA) and data logger following the procedure described by Kubota and Hamid (1992)

In conclusion the results of the study indicated that BM 01 is more salt tolerant than the other genotype. The gas exchange characters reduction of BM 21 as associated with salt stress is likely to be a consequence of a number of differing effects of salt on plant processes, including effects on photosynthetic performance.
