Study the Physical Properties of the Novotex Fabrics.

Objectives:

1.To improve the drape property of Novotex fabrics

2.To compare the drape property of the Novotex fabric with 100% cotton fabric

Methodology:

Three types of fabrics were produced for this experiments. Such as Novocel (100% jute), Novotex Union and cotton (100% cotton yarn) fabrics and the weave design was plain using simple shuttle loom having 120 P.P.M. To produce Novocel fabric 3 lbs/spy i.e. 103 tex of jute yarn was used both warp and weft direction. To produce Novocel fabric 2 ply of 20 s cotton yarn was used for warp and 3 lbs/spy in 103 tex of jute yarn as weft. To produce 100% cotton fabric 2 ply of 20 s cotton yarn was used both for warp and weft. The jute yarns were spun in the spinning department of Mechanical Processing Division as per standard processing machine method. Cotton yarn was collected from the BTMC and the fabric was weaved in the weaving department of Mechanical Processing division. Finally chemical modification i.e. woollenisation, scouring, bleaching and other chemical treatments were done in the dyeing and finishing department of pilot plant division. The test specimen were cut randomly throughout the fabric of 10 meter length. The diameter of the sample was 12 inch and was placed on a circular support of appreciably smaller diameter (5 inch dia). A Drape meter was used to measure the projecting image on a plane surface. The area of the shadow cast by the freely hanging portion of the cloth was measured. Then the drape co-efficient was measured by the given formula expressed as percentage.

Achievement/Findings:

In comparison with the cotton or union fabrics (jute+cotton) Jute fabric was always regarded as harsh for furnishing fabrics. Wet treatments do not reduce this intrinsic stiffness/harsh property but causes relaxation the fibres which causes the fabric drape freely. The results show that the draping property of twill weave is better than the other two weaves. All the three fabrics were chemically treated step by step for increasing the draping property. The lower the drape co-efficient percentage the higher the drape property.
