Impact Assessment of Small Entrepreneurship Development on Socio-economic Status of Urban Women in Selected Areas of Rangpur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was an attempt to analyze various socio-economic aspects of handicraft producer women and the impact of the entrepreneurship on the livelihood of the women entrepreneur. The study was conducted in two selected urban areas-namely UttaM para and Tapodhan para in the municipal area of Rangpur District. A total of 90 women handicraft producers were selected as sample for the study. Simple random sampling technique was followed to select the sample. The impact of the women entrepreneurship was assessed in terms of economic and social gains accrued by women and the family activities. The findings of the study revealed that the average annual income of the households increased by 183%. The savings pattern of the respondent's household indicated a shift of positive attitude towards improvements in the standard of living due to women's contribution. After involvement in handicraft enterprise, different socio- economic indicators like housing status, health and sanitary condition, adopting family planning measures had been improved. The status of women in the family, decision making power of women in family affairs had also been improved. Although the respondents had to face some problems such as lack of sufficient capital, lack of training facilities, low price of the product, high input cost etc. but the entrepreneurship helped improve the livelihood of the entrepreneurs.

Methodology:

In the present study two urban areas of Rangpur Municipality of Rangpur District namely- Uttam para and Tapodhan para were selected purposively since the women entrepreneur engaged in handicraft making are available there. Then a list of women entrepreneur was prepared first. A total of 90 women handicraft entrepreneur were selected as sample for the study. Simple Random Sampling Technique was followed in selecting the samples. Data were collected by the researcher through interviewing the selected women entrepreneurs with the help of pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedule. Economic exploitation and socio-cultural oppression are the main reasons for women's subordinate status in the family and society. Now-a-days, women became more conscious, alert about their rights and freedom. The results of the present study indicated that small enterprise like handicraft production had positive effects on generating employment and income of women. As a result, positive changes have been occurred in their economic, social and decision making indicators. With the consequences of the changes of these indicators, economic and social status of the small women entrepreneurs increased substantially. Therefore, the living standard of the respondent households has been remarkably improved. After involved in small enterprise, the annual income as well as the contribution of the women entrepreneurs to the household income has increased than ever before. However, the respondent can save a little amount during the whole year. In these circumstances, women entrepreneurs should be given proper training on handicraft production. Credit giving agencies should come forward to provide the women entrepreneurs with loan at easy terms and condition at lower interest rate. Thus, women handicraft entrepreneurs can be able to contribute a lot to the economic development of their family and our country as a whole.
