Effect of Environmental Factors on the Development of Leaf Blight Disease of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To find out the relationship between weather parameters and leaf blight severity, an experiment was conducted with 2 varieties of wheat sown on 3 different dates. It was observed that the leaf blight severity levels were lower at 1st date of sowing (20 Nov.) and became higher at 3rd date of sowing irrespective of wheat varieties. The variety Shatabdi received the lowest leaf blight severity (11) on 20 December, 2011 when the temperature and relative humidity ranged from 12.0⁰C- 20.5⁰C and 83-94%, respectively. Positive correlation was obtained between leaf blight severity of two wheat varieties and weather parameters such as maximum temperature during all dates and minimum temperature during 1st and 3rd date of sowing.

Objectives:

To understand the relationship between the disease development and weather parameters for better management of leaf blight disease of wheat.

Methodology:

The study was carried out under natural condition of disease infection in the experimental plot of Plant Pathology Division, Gazipur during 2011-2012 growing season. Two varieties of wheat namely Kanchan and Shatabdi were included in the study. Seeds of each variety were sown on 3 different dates at 10 days interval such as 20 November, 1 December and 12 December, 2011. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 2m keeping row to row spacing of 20 cm. Leaf blight severity was recorded for 6 times at 14 days interval starting after 30 DAS (Days after sowing), using double digit scoring (00-99) scale. Weather parameters viz. maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity and rainfall corresponding to the disease observation intervals of 3 different dates were obtained from meteorological unit, BARI, Joydebpur. Simple correlation analysis was performed by using weather parameters as independent variables and leaf blight severity as dependent variables.

Results showed that leaf blight severity levels were higher in Kanchan and lower in Shatabdi. The disease severity was gradually increased with every 14 days interval in 2 wheat varieties sown on 3 different dates. The lowest leaf blight severity was recorded in the variety Shatabdi at the time of 1st observation i.e after 30 DAS, while the disease severity was highest in the variety Kanchan at final observation ie after 100 DAS . Again leaf blight severity levels were lower at 1st date of sowing (20 November) and it was higher at 3rd date of sowing (12 December) irrespective of wheat varieties . The variety Shatabdi received the lowest leaf blight severity (11) on 20 December, 2011 when the temperature and relative humidity ranged from 12.0⁰C -20.5⁰C and 83-94%, respectively . But the highest disease severity (81) was recorded in the variety Kanchan on 22 March, 2012, when the temperature and relative humidity ranged from 24.5-34.8⁰C and 45-91%, respectively . Positive correlation was obtained between leaf blight severity and weather parameters such as maximum temperature during all dates and minimum temperature during 1st and 3rd date of sowing . It means that, the disease progressed fairly well with the increasing range of temperature. Negative correlation with maximum and minimum relative humidity (RH) indicated that the RH does not appear to play any positive role in leaf blight disease development. Rainfall did not occur at the experimental site during wheat growing season.
