Effect of Hormones, Boric Acid, Fertilizer and Urea Application on Severity of Fruit Drop of Guava

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at farmer’s field of Shara Gopalpur, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2011-12 to find out the effective management practice against fruit dropping of guava. Nine different treatments were tested for their performance against the disease. All the treatments showed significantly better performance over control. The lowest incidence of fruit dropping of guava (15.76%) was recorded in application of recommended doses of fertilizer and the highest (40.58%) was in control.

Objectives:

To find out the effective management practice to control fruit dropping of guava.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at farmer’s field of Shara Gopalpur, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2011-12. Weeds and stubbles were removed from the field. The experiment was carried out following Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Plant to plant distance was 8 ft. and row to row distance was 8 ft. The test variety was Thai guava-2. Nine treatments were T₁= Spray NAA (Naphthalene acetic acid) @ 45 ppm, T₂₌ Spray GA3 (Gibberellic acid) @ 25 ppm, T₃₌ Water Spray - 3 times, T₄ = Application of recommended doses of fertilizer (Cow dung 15 kg, Urea 200g, TSP 200g and MOP 200g per plant), T₅= Spray Boric acid @ 0.2%, T₆= Irrigation - 5 times, T₇= Soil application of Boric acid @ 5 g/tree, T₈= Spray Urea @ 0.2%, T₉= Farmers practice. The treatments T₁, T_2, T₅ and T₈ were applied 2 times at marble stage and fruit development stage. Two years aged guava garden were selected in this experiment. Data were recorded on incidence of fruit dropping (%), no. of branches/plant and no. of fruit/plant). The recorded data were analyzed statistically to find out the level of significance and the variations among the respective data were compared following Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The incidence of fruit dropping of guava before June 2012 ranged from 15.76 – 40.58%, where the highest incidence was recorded in control and the lowest was in application of recommended dose of fertilizer which is statistically similar to water spray (16.47%). The highest fruit retention (84.24%) was recorded from application of recommended doses of fertilizer which was statistically similar to water spray (83.53%) and the lowest (59.42%) was in control. The highest (102.0) number of fruit per plant was recorded from water spray and the lowest was recorded from spray of GA3 (Gibberellic acid) @ 25 ppm.
