The study is designed to develop a crop-fish culture method using ditch-dyke system. Eight ditch-dyke systems in low lying areas of Jhalokati and Rajapur Upazilla of Jhalokati district and two ditch-dyke systems in low elevated lands in Gabtoli Upazila of Bogra district have been developed for crops and fish production, simultaneously. Summer & winter vegetables were grown on the dyke. The yield of Indian spinach was the highest as well as profitable according to BCR. In winter, the yield of eggplant (55 t/ha) and bottle gourd (52 t/ha) were the highest. In case of fish production, Monoculture of tilapia and shing, and polyculture of different fish species have been conducted. Yield of tilapia was 9.9 t/ha/120 days whereas the yield in polyculture system and monoculture of shing was 7.4 and 2.0 t/ha/120 days respectively. In monoculture of tilapia, gross income was significantly higher (P<0.05) compared to polyculture and monoculture of shing. The result indicates that the farmer’s income will be double in monoculture of tilapia than polyculture and monoculture of shing. In conclusion, the present result indicated that the Ditch-Dyke System is profitable and farmers’ income will increase ten to twelve times higher than that conventional production system.

1. To increase resource (land & water) productivity of low lying areas through ditch-dyke system with crop and fish culture, and

2. To increase farm income through these interventions. 3. To increase knowledge and skill of farmers on this innovation.

In order to achieve the objectives, the major activities were to convert lowland into ditch-dyke system for growing fish in the ditches and horticultural crops on the dyke simultaneously. Adaptation of growing crops on the dyke and suitable culture system of fish in the ditches are the challenging job of this intervention to increase farm income. Therefore, training is necessary to increase knowledge and skill of farmer on this innovation. The proposed project was therefore comprised of three components (i) Converting lowland into ditch-dyke system, (ii) Development of suitable fish culture technology in the ditches, and (iii) Development of suitable production technology for growing horticultural crops on the dykes.

The maximum yield of Indian spinach was 49.4 t/ha while the minimum yield of red amaranth was 6.18 t/ha. The yield of cucumber, okra and sweet gourd was approximately half of the Indian spinach whereas the yield of bitter gourd and ridge gourd was more than half of the Indian spinach. The Indian spinach was profitable according to BCR among various summer vegetables grown in the first year. According to BCR, the bitter gourd was the second highest profitable one among various summer vegetables grown on the dike.In winter, the yield of eggplant (55 t/ha) and bottle gourd (52 t/ha) were the highest. In case of fish production, Monoculture of tilapia and shing, and polyculture of different fish species have been conducted. The ADG (g/day) and SGR (% per day) of 3.55 and 1.58 in GIFT tilapia at stocking density of 200 nos./decimal were found in this study. In contrast, the ADG (g/day) and SGR (% per day) were 0.54 and 2.78 in shing at stocking density of 300 nos./decimal. The fish production will be calculated at the end of experimental period (early November 2012) and the profitable fish culture system will be determined based on ANOVA and BCR. In the next year, the farmers will follow the profitable vegetable and fish production systems obtained in first year for confirmation of those production systems.
